Cholecystectomy: laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery
A cholecystectomy, or gallbladder removal surgery, is performed laparoscopically at Ciba, which results in faster recovery time for patients, and minimal risks of possible complications. Using a laparoscope, 3 or 4 small incisions are made around the abdomen. Each incision is less than one inch and provides access for the surgeon to use a laparoscopic for this surgery. Depending on the patient’s gallbladder, the surgery may take between 20 minutes to 2 hours.
Risks for developing gallstones.
Obesity is a major risk factor for cholesterol gallbladder disease (GD), which includes gallstones and other gallbladder issues. Higher levels of cholesterol in overweight individuals may also cause gallstones.Â
Studies have indicated that people who have fat accumulated around their waist, are more likely to develop gallstones than those who carry fat around their hips and thighs. Female’s are also at risk of developing gallstones as female sex hormones of estrogen and progesterone increase the amount of cholesterol in the bile, and slows the emptying of the gallbladder.Â
Rapid weight loss, or weight cycling of rapidly gaining and losing weight, is also a risk factor for developing gallstones. As bariatric surgery patients normally lose a significant amount of weight in the first 3 to 6 months post-op, gallstones may develop and a cholecystectomy may be required. Â
Recovery post procedure
The recovery time for bariatric patients who also have gallbladder removal surgery is equivalent to that of other bariatric surgery procedures. Patients may partake in light, non-strenuous activities within one week.

If a patient has gallbladder removal surgery at the time of bariatric surgery, a fee of $500.00 USD will apply in addition to the price of the bariatric procedure.
